Trazodone (trazodone hydrochloride) is an antidepressant medication used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). It belongs to a group of drugs called serotonin receptor antagonists and reuptake inhibitors (SARIs)1. Trazodone helps to restore the balance of serotonin, a natural chemical in the brain, which can improve mood, appetite, and energy levels, as well as decrease anxiety and insomnia related to depression.
Benefits of Trazodone:
- It improves mood and reduces symptoms of depression.
- Helps with sleep disturbances associated with depression.
- It may reduce anxiety and improve overall well-being.
Dosage:
- Starting dose: 150 mg in divided doses daily.
- Maintenance dose: May be increased by 50 mg daily every three to four days.
- Maximum dose: 400 mg per day in divided doses.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviors: Antidepressants, including trazodone, can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in pediatric and young adult patients. Close monitoring is required.
- Serotonin Syndrome: Increased risk when co-administered with other serotonergic agents. Discontinue trazodone and initiate supportive treatment if it occurs.
- Cardiac Arrhythmias: Increases the QT interval. Avoid the use of drugs that also increase the QT interval in patients with risk factors for prolonged QT interval2.
- Orthostatic Hypotension and Syncope: Warn patients of the risk and symptoms of hypotension.
- Increased Risk of Bleeding: Concomitant use of aspirin, NSAIDs, other antiplatelet drugs, warfarin, and other anticoagulants may increase this risk.
- Priapism: Cases of painful and prolonged penile erections and priapism have been reported. Immediate medical attention should be sought if signs and symptoms of prolonged penile erections or priapism are observed.
Usage Instructions:
- Administration: Take trazodone shortly after a meal or light snack. Swallow the tablet whole or break it in half along the score line, but do not chew or crush it.
- Discontinuation: Gradual dose reduction is recommended when discontinuing trazodone.
Storage Information:
- Storage: Store at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep it in its original container, away from moisture and light.
Common Side Effects:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Dry mouth.
- Drowsiness.
